What are sinuses?

Your sinuses are four paired cavities (spaces) in your head. Narrow passages connect them. Sinuses make mucus that drains out of the passages in your nose. This drainage helps keep your nose clean and free of bacteria, allergens and other germs (pathogens) at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

Types of sinusitis

We describe types of sinusitis based on how long it’s been going on (acute, subacute, chronic or recurrent) and what’s causing it (bacteria, virus or fungus).

Acute, subacute, chronic and recurrent sinusitis
  • Acute sinusitis symptoms (nasal congestion, drainage, facial pain/pressure and decreased sense of smell) last less than four weeks. It’s usually caused by viruses like the common cold.
  • Subacute sinusitis symptoms last four to 12 weeks at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Chronic sinusitis symptoms last at least 12 weeks. Bacteria are usually the cause.
  • Recurrent acute sinusitis symptoms come back four or more times in one year and last less than two weeks each time.
Bacterial and viral sinusitis

Viruses, like the ones that cause the common cold, cause most cases of sinusitis. Bacteria can cause sinusitis, or they can infect you after a case of viral sinusitis. If you have a runny nose, stuffy nose and facial pain that don’t go away after ten days, you might have bacterial sinusitis. Your symptoms may seem to improve but then return and are worse than the initial symptoms. Antibiotics and decongestants usually work well on bacterial sinusitis at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

Fungal sinusitis

Sinus infections caused by fungus are usually more serious than other forms of sinusitis. They’re more likely to happen if you have a weakened immune system.

How do I know if I have sinusitis, COVID, a cold or an allergy?

The symptoms of allergies, sinus infections, COVID-19, and colds are comparable. It can be hard to distinguish between them. Usually, a common cold develops, peaks, and then gradually wanes. From a few days to a week, it lasts. Sneezing, runny nose, congestion, itchy eyes and nose, and postnasal drip (mucus in the throat) are all symptoms of nasal allergies. Typically, they don’t produce the same level of facial pain as sinus infections. Additional symptoms, such as fever and dyspnea at the time of sinus infection (Sinusitis), can be brought on by COVID-19.

A cold, COVID or allergies can all cause sinus infections. You can test yourself or have a provider test you for some viral infections, like COVID-19 and the flu.

What are the signs and symptoms of sinusitis?

Common symptoms of a sinus infection include:

  • Postnasal drip (mucus dripping down your throat).
  • Runny nose with thick yellow or green mucus.
  • Stuffy nose at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Facial pressure (particularly around your nose, eyes and forehead). This might get worse when you move your head around or bend over.
  • Pressure or pain in your teeth.
  • Ear pressure or pain.
  • Bad breath (halitosis) or a bad taste in your mouth.
  • Headache at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

What causes sinus infections?

Viruses, bacteria, fungi and allergens can cause sinusitis. Specific triggers for sinusitis include:

  • The common cold.
  • The flu (influenza).
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Haemophilus influenza
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Nasal and seasonal allergies.

What are the risk factors for sinusitis?

Some people are more likely to get sinusitis than others. Risk factors include:

  • Nasal allergies at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Nasal polyps (growths).
  • Deviated septum. Your septum is a line of tissue that divides your nose. A deviated septum isn’t straight, narrowing the passage on one side of your nose. This can cause a blockage.
  • A weakened immune system. This can be from illnesses like HIV or cancer, or from certain medications.

Is sinusitis contagious?

Sinusitis itself isn’t contagious. But the viruses and bacteria that can cause it are. Remember to follow good handwashing practices, avoid other people if you’re sick and sneeze or cough into your elbow at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

What happens if sinusitis is left untreated?

You don’t necessarily need to treat sinusitis — it often goes away on its own. Very rarely, untreated sinus infections can lead to life-threatening infections. This happens if bacteria or fungi spread to your brain, eyes or nearby bone.

How is a sinus infection diagnosed?

Healthcare providers diagnose sinusitis based on your symptoms and health history. A provider will check your ears, nose and throat for swelling, draining or blockage. They might use an endoscope (a small, lighted instrument) to look inside your nose at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

A primary care provider may also refer you to a specialist, like an otolaryngologist (also called an ENT — an ear, nose and throat specialist).

Specific tests to diagnose sinusitis

Specific tests your provider might order to diagnose sinus infection include:

  • Nasal endoscopy.
  • Nasal swabs.Your provider may use a soft-tipped stick to get a fluid sample from your nose. They’ll test it for viruses or other germs that might be causing your symptoms.
  • In some cases, your provider might order a computed tomography (CT) scan to better understand what’s happening inside your sinuses.
  • Allergy testing.If you have chronic sinusitis, your provider may test you for allergies that could be triggering it at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Rarely, a provider may take a tissue sample from your nose for testing.

Management and Treatment

How is sinusitis treated?

There are many treatment options for sinusitis, depending on your symptoms and how long you’ve had them. You can treat a sinus infection at home with:

  • Decongestants at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) cold and allergy medications.
  • Nasal saline rinses.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids.

If symptoms of sinusitis don’t improve after 10 days, a provider may prescribe:

  • Oral or topical decongestants.
  • Prescription intranasal steroid sprays. (Don’t use nonprescription sprays or drops for longer than three to five days — they may actually increase congestion.)

Providers treat chronic sinusitis by focusing on the underlying condition. Treatments can include:

  • Intranasal steroid sprays at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Topical antihistamine sprays or oral pills.
  • Leukotriene antagonists, like montelukast.
  • Surgery to treat structural issues, polyps or fungal infections.

What are the best medications for a sinus infection?

If you need an antibiotic, which one your provider prescribes depends on your specific situation. Some options include:

  • Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate).

Are complementary and alternative therapies useful for treating sinusitis?

You might find acupressure, acupuncture or facial massage helpful in reducing symptoms of sinusitis, including draining, pressure and pain. Ask a provider if these therapies might help in your specific case at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).

Do I need antibiotics for every sinus infection?

No. Providers often wait to see how long your symptoms last before prescribing antibiotics. Many sinus infections are caused by viruses. You can’t cure viral infections with antibiotics. Overusing antibiotics or using them to treat viral infections can lead to unnecessary side effects or antibiotic resistance. This may make future infections harder to treat.

Prevention

Can sinusitis be prevented?

Depending on the cause, there are a few ways to reduce your risk of getting sinus infections, including:

  • Rinsing your nose with saline (salt water) as directed by your provider.
  • Taking steps to prevent allergies. This includes medications, allergy shots and avoiding your known allergy triggers (like dust, pollen or smoke).
  • Using steroid nasal sprays if your provider recommends them.
  • Establishing good handwashing and other habits that reduce your risk of getting sick with infectious diseases at Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Avoiding smoke. There are ways to help you quit smoking, if you do.

Outlook / Prognosis

What can I expect if I have sinusitis?

Sinusitis usually only lasts a week to 10 days. You can usually treat it with over-the-counter medicines and at-home treatments. If you have chronic sinusitis or if it keeps coming back, there may be underlying causes that you’ll need to treat.

Diverticulitis is a complication that can affect people with diverticulosis, small pockets on the inside of their colon. If one of the pockets becomes injured or infected, it can cause inflammation inside. If you have a sharp pain in your lower left abdominal quadrant, it might be diverticulitis.

Overview

What is diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis is inflammation in your diverticula, which are small pockets that can develop on the inside of your colon. Having diverticula is called diverticulosis. It’s common as you get older, and most people never have any problems with it. But if one of your diverticula becomes inflamed, it can cause acute pain and other symptoms. It might mean that it has an infection, which needs medical attention.

How common is diverticulitis?

Although diverticulosis is common, diverticulitis is an uncommon complication. It affects about 4% of people with diverticulosis. Once you’ve had it, you have a 20% chance of getting it again.

Are there different types of diverticulitis?

Healthcare providers classify diverticulitis as acute or chronic and as complicated or uncomplicated.

Acute/chronic

Diverticulitis begins as an acute problem, which means that it comes on suddenly and goes away shortly with treatment. But some people have recurring (repeat) episodes of diverticulitis, and some people develop chronic inflammation. There are different theories about why this happens. It may be because an acute episode didn’t heal completely, or it may be related to another chronic condition in your colon.

Complicated/uncomplicated

Most of the time, diverticulitis is uncomplicated, which means that inflammation and possible infection are the extents of the problem. It heals easily with the right treatment. Diverticulitis becomes complicated when the inflammation begins to cause secondary problems. For example, severe acute inflammation may cause a diverticulum (singular of diverticula) to rupture. Chronic inflammation may cause scarring.

Symptoms and Causes

What are the symptoms of diverticulitis?

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain, often severe.
  • Distended abdomen or palpable colon (you can feel it with your hand).
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Rectal bleeding.
  • Constipation or, less commonly, diarrhea.

What does a diverticulitis attack or flare-up feel like?

Whether you’re having an acute diverticulitis attack or a flare-up of chronic diverticulitis, the pain will be similar. An acute attack may come on more suddenly, while a chronic flare-up may build up over a few days. You should be able to locate it in the precise spot where your diverticulum has become inflamed. It may feel sharp and penetrating or have a burning quality. The pain is usually moderate to severe.

Where is diverticulitis pain located?

Diverticula typically develop in the sigmoid colon, the final section of the colon in individuals of European ancestry. This section starts on your lower left side and ends where your rectum is, slanting slightly to the right. This explains why the lower left quadrant of the abdomen is where most persons with diverticulitis experience pain. Periodically, lower abdomen pain might also radiate to your back or pelvis.

However, in people of Asian descent, it’s more common to have diverticulosis in the first part of the colon, which is in your upper right quadrant. Diverticulitis here might cause upper abdominal pain.

What causes diverticulitis?

Inflammation in your diverticula often involves a tear in the lining and infection, though it’s not always clear which came first. On one hand, diverticula make great hiding places for bacteria to set up camp and multiply. This might happen if, for example, some poop gets stuck in one of them. A bacterial infection might trigger inflammation, and inflammation might cause a diverticulum to swell and tear.

On the other hand, if a diverticulum tears for another reason, it can easily become infected by normal levels of bacteria living in your colon. It might tear if hard poop stretches it while passing through, or if it’s been affected by general colitis (inflammation in your colon). Some studies have suggested that cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in your colon might be a significant factor in triggering diverticulitis.

Is diverticulitis hereditary?

Diverticulitis seems to occur incidentally (by chance). But genetics might be partly involved in getting diverticulosis. Although you aren’t born with diverticulosis, you’re more likely to develop it in a certain part of your colon if you’re of European or Asian descent. It’s also possible that genetics could influence your likelihood of developing chronic inflammation. More research is needed on this subject.

What are the possible complications of diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis is uncomplicated 80% of the time. But severe or persistent diverticulitis can lead to complications such as:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Bleeding from diverticula can be severe and lead to anemia.
  • Intestinal obstruction: Severe swelling might cause your colon to temporarily narrow. Chronic swelling might cause scarring (stricture), which can cause more permanent narrowing.
  • Fistulas. An inflamed and eroded colon wall might fuse to another body canal (such as your small intestine, bladder or vagina), creating an inappropriate tunnel between the two.
  • Bladder inflammation: Diverticulitis that’s close to your bladder may irritate it. A fistula to your bladder may also spread an infection there.
  • Abscess: An abscess is a pocket of infected pus that may need to be drained. If it ruptures, it can infect your peritoneal cavity (peritonitis). This is an emergency.
  • Gastrointestinal perforation: If a diverticulum becomes swollen enough to rupture (tear), it could allow intestinal bacteria to leak into your peritoneal cavity. Peritonitis can lead to sepsis.

What are the signs of complicated diverticulitis?

You might’ve developed complications if you notice:

  • Fresh blood in your poop.
  • Paleness in your face or you feel weak.
  • You feel like you need to pee often or irritation when you pee.
  • Your abdomen is rigid and sensitive to touch.

Diagnosis and Tests

How is diverticulitis diagnosed?

If you and your healthcare provider already know that you have diverticulosis, they might recognize your symptoms as possible diverticulitis. But people often don’t know, and the symptoms of diverticulitis can resemble many other conditions. Your healthcare provider may begin with some routine tests to rule out other causes, such as a blood test (comprehensive metabolic panel), stool test or urine test.

When your provider suspects diverticulitis, they’ll look for it on imaging tests. A CT scan works well: it’s quick and can show the extent of the inflammation as well as any related complications. In some cases, your provider might need to look inside your colon with a lighted scope to investigate further. This is called a colonoscopy. They might be able to treat some complications during the colonoscopy.

Management and Treatment

Can diverticulitis go away on its own?

If it’s mild and uncomplicated, it can go away on its own. But you should still go to a healthcare provider to have it evaluated. They might need to give you antibiotics for an infection, and some people might need prescription pain medications. Your provider will also tell you how to care for yourself at home while you’re recovering. It takes about a week. They’ll want you to keep in touch during this time.

How do you treat diverticulitis at home?

If your healthcare provider has given you the go-ahead, you can treat diverticulitis at home with:

  • A liquid diet. Avoiding solid foods gives your bowels a chance to rest and recover from the disease. Your provider can give you more specific instructions on what to eat and when.
  • Prescription antibiotics. You may not need them, but if you do, your provider will give you some to take home with you. The type will depend on the kind of infection you have.
  • Acetaminophen. For over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief, it’s best to stick to acetaminophen (Tylenol®). Other common pain relievers could increase your risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.

Drugs to avoid with diverticulitis

Healthcare providers suggest that you avoid NSAIDs when you have diverticulitis, as they can increase your risk of bleeding. NSAID stands for “nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.” These include:

  • Aspirin (Bayer® or St. Joseph®).
  • Ibuprofen (Motrin® or Advil®).
  • Naproxen sodium (Aleve®).

What happens if diverticulitis goes untreated?

You may not need treatment if you have a mild and uncomplicated case. But it’s important to see a healthcare provider about diverticulitis. If you don’t, you may end up with a more severe and complicated case. Certain infections may need to be treated with antibiotics or antivirals to go away. Inflammation that doesn’t go away may begin to cause secondary problems. Pain may also worsen.

How do you get diverticulitis to go away?

If conservative at-home treatment hasn’t worked, or if you have severe, chronic or complicated diverticulitis, you may need to stay in the hospital for treatment. Treatment may include:

  • IV medication. Your provider may give you antibiotics or antivirals through an IV line so that the medicine goes directly to your bloodstream. They may also give you pain relief this way. Some people may need strong analgesics, such as opioids.
  • Blood transfusion. If you’ve lost a lot of blood from a bleeding diverticulum, you may need an emergency blood transfusion to replace it.
  • Endoscopic procedures. Your provider might use a colonoscope or sigmoidoscope — different types of endoscopes that examine your colon — to treat minor complications. For example, they can often stop active bleeding, drain an abscess or open up a narrowed section of your bowel using tools passed through the endoscope.
  • Surgery. Some people may need surgery to treat an abscess, persistent bleed, perforation (tear) or fistula. In rare cases of chronic diverticulitis, some people may need to have the problematic section of their bowel removed (colectomy). This might involve a temporary colostomy.

Prevention

Can I prevent diverticulitis from occurring or returning?

Healthcare providers don’t know enough about why diverticulitis happens or why it returns to know definitively how to prevent it. But they suspect that general bowel wellness can help. Eating more plants and fewer animal fats, drinking enough water and getting some regular exercise can help keep your bowel movements healthy. For some people, they might recommend fiber supplements or probiotics.

Are there any dietary restrictions with diverticulosis or diverticulitis?

In the past, people with diverticulosis were told to avoid seeds and nuts, in case one might get stuck in a diverticulum and cause diverticulitis. This risk is considered mostly a myth today. Seeds and nuts are great sources of fiber and plant-based protein, and they tend to appear in healthy meals. It’s much better for your bowels to maintain a healthy diet overall than to worry about the rare chance of a seed going awry.

Outlook / Prognosis

What can I expect if I have this condition?

Only a small percentage of people will have complicated diverticulitis, and only a small percentage of those will need surgery. In most cases, even complicated diverticulitis resolves quickly and completely with treatment. Diverticulitis shouldn’t affect your overall life expectancy. Only in the unlikely event of a bowel perforation or a ruptured abscess would you be at risk of life-threatening complications.

Living With

What should I do if diverticulitis keeps coming back?

If diet and lifestyle improvements haven’t prevented diverticulitis from recurring, there might be other factors involved that put you more at risk. People with weakened immune systems are more prone to frequent infections and slower to recover. People with autoimmune diseases are more likely to have chronic inflammation. Even the balance of different bacteria living in your gut may affect your gut immunity.

Healthcare providers don’t always know why diverticulitis continues to return in some people. But if it’s returned more than once, and if it’s brought complications at least once, they might suggest an elective bowel resection to resolve it. That means removing the small section of your colon that’s causing the trouble. If it’s not an emergency, you can probably do this as a one-step surgery without a colostomy.

What is borderline personality disorder (BPD)?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition marked by extreme mood fluctuations, instability in interpersonal relationships and impulsivity.

People with BPD have an intense fear of abandonment and have trouble regulating their emotions, especially anger. They also tend to show impulsive and dangerous behaviors, such as reckless driving and threatening self-harm. All of these behaviors make it difficult for them to maintain relationships at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Borderline personality disorder is one of a group of conditions called “Cluster B” personality disorders, which involve dramatic and erratic behaviors. Personality disorders are chronic (long-term) dysfunctional behavior patterns that are inflexible, prevalent and lead to social issues and distress.

Many people who live with borderline personality disorder don’t know they have it and may not realize there’s a healthier way to behave and relate to others at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

What is the difference between borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder?

While bipolar disorder is also characterized by wide fluctuations in mood and behavior, it’s distinct from borderline personality disorder (BPD).

In BPD, mood and behavior change rapidly in response to significant stress, especially when interacting with other people, whereas in bipolar disorder, moods are more sustained and less reactive. People with bipolar disorder also have significant changes in energy and activity, unlike those with BPD.

Who does borderline personality disorder affect?

Most personality disorders begin in the teen years when your personality further develops and matures. As a result, almost all people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder are above the age of 18 at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Although anyone can develop BPD, it’s more common if you have a family history of BPD. People with other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression or eating disorders, are also at higher risk.

Nearly 75% of people diagnosed with BPD are people assigned female at birth (AFAB). Research suggests that people assigned male at birth (AMAB) may be equally affected by BPD, but they may be misdiagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

How common is borderline personality disorder?

Borderline personality disorder is relatively rare. Approximately 1.4% of the adult U.S. population has BPD.

Symptoms and Causes

What are the signs and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD)?

Signs and symptoms of borderline personality disorder usually appear in your late teenage years or early adulthood. A troubling event or stressful experience can trigger symptoms or make them worse.

Over time, symptoms usually decrease and may go away completely.

Symptoms can range from manageable to very severe and can include any combination of the following:

  • Fear of abandonment: It’s common for people with BPD to feel uncomfortable being alone. When people with BPD feel that they’re being abandoned or neglected, they feel intense fear or anger. They might track their loved ones’ whereabouts or stop them from leaving. Or they might push people away before getting too close to avoid rejection at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
  • Unstable, intense relationships: People with BPD find it challenging to keep healthy personal relationships because they tend to change their views of others abruptly and dramatically. They can go from idealizing others to devaluing them quickly and vice versa. Their friendships, marriages and relationships with family members are often chaotic and unstable.
  • Unstable self-image or sense of self: People with BPD often have a distorted or unclear self-image and often feel guilty or ashamed and see themselves as “bad.” They may also abruptly and dramatically change their self-image, shown by suddenly changing their goals, opinions, careers or friends. They also tend to sabotage their own progress. For instance, they may fail a test on purpose, ruin relationships or get fired from a job at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
  • Rapid mood changes: People with BPD may experience sudden changes in how they feel about others, themselves and the world around them. Irrational emotions — including uncontrollable anger, fear, anxiety, hatred, sadness and love — change frequently and suddenly. These swings usually only last a few hours and rarely more than a few days.
  • Impulsive and dangerous behavior: Episodes of reckless driving, fighting, gambling, substance use, binge eating and/or unsafe sexual activity are common among people with BPD.
  • Repeated self-harm or suicidal behavior: People with BPD may cut, burn or injure themselves (self-harm) or threaten to do so. They may also have suicidal thoughts. These self-destructive acts are usually triggered by rejection, possible abandonment or disappointment in a caregiver or lover at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
  • Persistent feelings of emptiness: Many people with BPD feel sad, bored, unfulfilled or “empty.” Feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing are common, too.
  • Anger management issues: People with BPD have difficulty controlling their anger and often become intensely angry. They may express their anger with biting sarcasm, bitterness or angry tirades. These episodes are often followed by shame and guilt at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
  • Temporary paranoid thoughts: Dissociative episodes, paranoid thoughts and sometimes hallucinations may be triggered by extreme stress, usually fear of abandonment. These symptoms are temporary and usually not severe enough to be considered a separate disorder.

Not everyone with borderline personality disorder experiences all of these symptoms. The severity, frequency and duration of symptoms are unique to each person at Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

What causes borderline personality disorder?

Healthcare providers believe BPD results from a combination of factors, including:

  • Childhood abuse and trauma: Up to 70% of people with BPD have experienced sexual, emotional or physical abuse as a child. Maternal separation, poor maternal attachment, inappropriate family boundaries and parental substance use disorder are also associated with BPD.
  • Genetics: Studies show that borderline personality disorder runs in families. If you have a family history of BPD, you’re more likely — but not guaranteed — to develop the condition.

What is a stye?

A stye (or sty) is a painful red bump on the edge of your eyelid. It can look similar to an acne pimple and may be tender to the touch. A stye forms when a tiny oil-producing gland in your eyelash follicle or eyelid skin becomes blocked and a bacterial infection develops. The medical term for a stye is “hordeolum.”

It’s common to have a stye on only one eyelid, but it’s also possible to get styes on both lids. A stye usually lasts one to two weeks and will typically go away on its own. But in cases where it doesn’t, you may need to rely on an eye care provider to drain it. They may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the infection.

How do you get rid of a stye?

Usually, a stye disappears on its own in one to two weeks. You can manage your stye at home with a self-care regimen to feel better more quickly and to minimize pain and swelling. Following these guidelines will help you maintain your style at home.

Do

  • Use warm compresses.Apply a warm washcloth to your eyelid for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, three to five times a day. Rewarm the washcloth by soaking it in warm water, wring and repeat. Many people believe that using green tea bags moistened in warm water as eye compresses will help the stye not only feel better, but also speed healing, due in part to the antibacterial properties of green tea. Some scientists have shown that a natural antioxidant in green tea breaks down the cell wall of the bacteria, killing it. While there’s debate about this among eye experts, it won’t hurt you and should be at least as effective as using a warm washcloth as a compress.
  • Clean eyelids.Gently wipe away eye discharge with a mild soapy solution made from half baby shampoo and half water. You can also use eyelid wipes available in most drug stores.

Don’t

  • Squeeze or pop a stye.
  • Rub or touch your eyelid.
  • Wear makeup or contact lenses until the area has healed.

How will an eye care provider treat a stye?

If after 48 hours of stye self-care, your pain and swelling aren’t getting any better, it’s time to call your eye care provider. Stye treatment by a medical provider may include:

  • A small cut (incision) to drain your stye in the office (under local anesthesia).
  • Prescription antibiotic ointment to apply to your eyelid or antibiotic eye drops. Your provider may prescribe oral antibiotics in cases where the area around your eye is infected or after an incision is made to drain an internal stye.
  • A steroid injection into the stye to reduce eyelid swelling.

Prevention

Can styes be prevented?

The best way to prevent a stye is to practice good facial hygiene, including:

  • Washing your hands thoroughly and often, especially before touching your face and eyes.
  • Washing your hands before and after removing contact lenses. Clean your contacts with disinfectant and lens cleaning solution. Dispose of daily wear or other “limited use” lenses on the schedule that your eye care provider recommends.
  • Washing your face to remove dirt and/or makeup before going to bed.
  • Throwing away eye makeup every two to three months. Never share eye makeup with anyone else.

Outlook / Prognosis

How serious is a stye?

Styes are usually harmless. They may cause some minor irritation and discomfort, but they typically go away on their own. Stye self-care measures like warm compresses can help speed up the healing process.

Although it will be tempting to cover the stye with makeup, avoid doing this. Putting makeup on a stye can delay the healing process or even cause it to become more plugged up and infected, which, in turn, will make it more painful.

Living With

When should I see my healthcare provider?

You should see your healthcare provider if:

  • Your eye is swollen shut.
  • Pus or blood is leaking from the bump.
  • Pain and/or swelling increases after the first two to three days.
  • Blisters have formed on your eyelid.
  • Your eyelids feel hot.
  • Your vision has changed.
  • Styes keep coming back. If this happens, your provider may take a biopsy (a small sample of the stye), under local anesthesia, to rule out other more serious problems.
